Jim Haadsma Statement on Attorney General Ruling

Republicans’ $645 Million Funding Cuts Unconstitutional

Press Release

January 7, 2026

BATTLE CREEK, MI — Today, Jim Haadsma, Democratic candidate for Michigan House District 44, released the following statement after Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel ruled that House Republicans’ $645 million budget cuts were unconstitutional:

“Today’s ruling confirms a basic principle of responsible government: once funding is passed and signed into law, politicians don’t get to play games with it. House Republicans disregarded that principle by attempting to claw back funding that communities across Michigan were already relying on.

In District 44, that kind of instability has real consequences. Local governments, first responders, health care providers, and community organizations depend on predictable funding to do their jobs. When Republicans cut that funding, it created uncertainty for the people who rely on those services every day.

Michiganders deserve serious leadership that respects the law, values stability, and focuses on getting results for communities — and that’s the type of leadership I’ll bring to Lansing.”
