On Friday, January 21, 2022, a Calhoun County Corrections Deputy was conducting routine inmate checks in a pod at the Calhoun County Jail. At approximately 2:45 p.m., the deputy saw a 31-year-old inmate in a cell hanging himself with a bedsheet. The deputy radioed for assistance and immediate, life-saving measures were performed by several deputies and on-site medical personnel.
The inmate was transported to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital by LifeCare Ambulance, where he was pronounced dead at 7:19 p.m. The inmate was alone in his cell. The Michigan State Police and the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards will investigate this incident, as is protocol.
